What do Daniel Craig and Carey Mulligan have in common?
They were all anointed European Shooting Stars. Among the many delights at the Berlin Film Festival is the presentation of 10 Shooting Stars at a glamorous ceremony at the Berlinale Palast on Monday.
This year’s notable candidates include Denmark’s Mikkel Boe Folsgaard, for his role in A Royal Affair, and Kosovo’s Arta Dobroshi (pictured) who starred in the Dardennes brothers’ The Silence of Lorna.
In the UK’s case, candidates are submitted by the British Council. But the British are striking by their absence this year. Juror Thierry Cheze, deputy editor on French film magazine Studio CinéLive, insists 2013 entrant Holliday Grainger only just missed the cut. “I was sorry she didn’t make it. She was a big part of the discussion right to the end.”
The Berlin Film Festival runs until 17 February (berlinale.de)
